Further
development planned at Lake St Clair Wilderness Resort, Tasmania
Lake St Clair Wilderness Resort, also known as Cynthia Bay,
has provided a platform for day trippers and overnight
visitors to experience the majestic Lake St Clair Region for
over 70 years. Over this time, the region has grown
significantly in popularity.
Cynthia Bay now caters for over 100,000 visitors each year,
the social value of the area reflected in this high
visitation.
The Cynthia Bay proposal responds to the need for sustainable
and environmentally sensitive facilities for visitors to the
Lake St Clair National Park.
For many years Cynthia Bay has lacked sufficient accommodation
for visitors and bushwalkers, meaning the natural beauty of
the southern end of Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair World
Heritage Area has not been enjoyed by as many people as who
would have liked to.
With that in mind, Lake St Clair Wilderness Resort has
proposed an upgrade of its current accommodation facilities,
including the construction of 18 new cabins for families and
people wanting that special weekend away. One of these units
has been earmarked for disabled access.
Backpacker accommodation is proposed adding a further 32
backpacker beds to more than double the current number of 24
beds.
The plan also includes a wellness centre and an upgrade of the
existing main building, which will include the addition of a
multipurpose mezzanine space that will be used to run an
extensive interpretation program over the summer season and
then used for special interest groups and meetings in the
off-season.
A new boardwalk and extensive re-vegetation and rehabilitation
will also enhance access and amenity within the site and
will decrease the impact of visitors for years to come.
